Pattern by Etsy is Etsy’s hosted website for your shop. Design is free; once you publish, you get a 30-day free trial, then $15.00 USD per month on your Payment account (plus tax where applicable). Sellers ask a sharper question than “is a website nice?”: does skipping the 6.5% marketplace transaction fee on Pattern sales cover that $15—and what else still gets charged?

Fee-only break-even (6.5% savings): $15 ÷ 0.065 ≈ $230.77 ≈ $231/month of Pattern GMV. That ignores processing (still charged), tax on the subscription, optional domain costs, and the fact that Pattern GMV must come from owned traffic.

So the clean savings line is mostly avoided 6.5% (and avoided marketplace listing fees only for Pattern-only / Pattern-channel sales per Help)—not “zero fees.”
Savings from skipping 6.5% alone:
$15 ÷ 0.065 ≈ $230.77 → about $231 of Pattern GMV per month
GMV here means the Pattern order base that would have been charged 6.5% on the marketplace (item + shipping + gift wrap in listing currency). At $231 Pattern GMV, avoided transaction fees ≈ $15—enough to cover the subscription from that one line.
Still on every Pattern sale (US hypothetical processing): many US domestic models use 3% + $0.25. Label that as a US hypothetical—your country rate may differ. Processing does not disappear with Pattern.
Assume USD listing and Payment currency, no deposit FX, US processing 3% + $0.25, no sales tax in the example.
Order: item $40 + shipping $8 = $48. Marketplace takes 6.5% = $3.12 + processing 3%+$0.25 = $1.69. Pattern takes $0 transaction + the same $1.69 processing. One order saves $3.12; you need about 4.8 similar orders/mo (~$231 GMV) for transaction savings to cover $15. At $500 Pattern GMV/mo, avoided 6.5% ≈ $32.50 (~$17.50 ahead of the fee before your own ads/domain). At $100 GMV/mo, avoided ≈ $6.50—underwater on fee math alone. Pattern is not in Etsy search. You need email, social, paid ads, SEO, or offline demand. Treat it as subscription + your CAC versus 6.5% + marketplace discovery. If you already send buyers off-platform, Pattern can avoid 6.5%. If not, use the trial, measure Pattern GMV, and cancel from Dashboard Settings if you stay below ~$231/mo without another reason to keep it.

Keep if you can foresee ~$231+/mo Pattern GMV from owned channels (or clear brand value beyond fee savings), you accept processing and possible 2.5% FX, and you will cancel if the trial misses. Skip/cancel if you have no traffic plan, Pattern GMV stays well below ~$231/mo, you expected Offsite on the Pattern site (it does not apply), or you only wanted “a website” with no conversion path.
