If your shop listing currency and your Etsy Payments account currency are not the same, Etsy applies a 2.5% currency conversion fee on the sale amount. That fee is subtracted before funds show on your Payment account—so it is easy to miss when you only glance at order totals in shop currency.
This guide covers what triggers the fee, how to match currencies (or knowingly bake 2.5% into price), worked US-style fee stacks, a brief Pattern note, and a checklist. Facts checked against Etsy’s Help Center on October 23, 2026. Confirm live wording and your own Payment Settings in Shop Manager. For the broader fee map, see Etsy Fees in 2026: The Full Breakdown.
Per Help (“Currency Conversion Fees”):
Shop currency is universal for all listings. Default if unset is USD. Buyers can browse in supported browsing currencies; Payments processes in supported currencies. Fixed-cost fees (listings, Pattern) are published in USD and converted to Payment currency at market rate when reflected—separate from this 2.5% sale-amount fee.
Help is explicit on timing: the 2.5% comes out of the sale amount before that sale’s funds appear on the Payment account. You will not see “full shop-currency sale” land and then a later FX line in the same way you might expect from a bank wire—the conversion fee is already netted in.
Use the Sales CSV to see the market rates Etsy applied. When you reconcile profit, treat 2.5% FX as another fee layer beside:
Shipping is in the transaction base too—see Etsy fees on shipping. For Offsite mechanics, see Etsy Offsite Ads Explained.

Notes from Help:
Matching shop currency to Payment account currency is the clean way to avoid the 2.5% sale conversion fee. After a change, spot-check listings and a Sales CSV row so rounding did not cut margin.
Match currencies when:
Bake 2.5% into list price when:
Baking is not “avoiding” the fee. Matching is. Baking is margin math.
Illustrations only—not forecasts. Assume a US Etsy Payments seller for processing rates: 3% + $0.25 on item + shipping (+ applicable sales tax when it applies). Ignore buyer sales tax in the tables below for clarity. Item + shipping = $100 before taxes (Help-style round number). Listing renewal $0.20. Transaction 6.5% of $100 = $6.50. Processing on $100 ≈ $3.25.
| Path | Transaction 6.5% | Processing | Listing | Currency FX 2.5% | Offsite 15% | Approx. fees |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| (a) Currencies match, no Offsite | −$6.50 | −$3.25 | −$0.20 | — | — | −$9.95 |
| (b) Currencies mismatch (+2.5% FX) | −$6.50 | −$3.25 | −$0.20 | −$2.50 | — | −$12.45 |
| (c) Match + Offsite 15% | −$6.50 | −$3.25 | −$0.20 | — | −$15.00 | −$24.95 |
| (d) Mismatch + Offsite 15% | −$6.50 | −$3.25 | −$0.20 | −$2.50 | −$15.00 | −$27.45 |
On this $100 illustration, mismatch alone costs about $2.50—roughly another quarter of the base transaction fee. Under mandatory 12% Offsite the Offsite line would be about $12.00 instead of $15.00; FX still stacks on top when currencies differ.
Bake-in sketch (hypothetical): recovering 2.5% on a mismatch may mean raising $100 toward about $102.56 before 6.5% and processing re-bite on the higher price. Recalculate—do not rely on a flat “add 2.5%” sticky note. See the estimated earnings calculator and Canopio for stacking lines.
Pattern is a related FX case, not the same as Etsy marketplace listing currency:
If you run both an Etsy shop and Pattern, audit two currency pairs: shop vs Payment, and Pattern vs Payment.
Canopio is a free one-order calculator (6.5% on item + shipping, processing, Offsite 12–15%), free listing score; rewrites $2.99/10 or $9.99/40; Shop Audit $9.90 one-time via Etsy OAuth (worst-first ranks + suggested prices, 14-day refund). Competitors often stop at one order; Audit covers the shop. Independent of Etsy. If shop and Payment currencies differ, add the 2.5% FX line manually.
When your shop listing currency is different from your Etsy Payments account currency. Etsy converts sale amounts from shop currency into Payment account currency and subtracts 2.5% of the sale amount before funds appear on the Payment account.
Shop Manager → Finances → Payment Settings → Currency → select your currency → optionally round to the nearest whole number → Change Shop Currency. Converting many listings can take up to an hour. New listings are priced in the chosen currency.
Before. Help states the 2.5% currency conversion fee is subtracted from the sale amount before funds are reflected on the Payment account. Market rates used for conversions appear in the Etsy Payments Sales CSV.
No. Help says you cannot time conversion based on intraday rate fluctuations. You can revert to the original currency and prices within 14 days; after 14 days, prices may not match due to rounding and FX.
Yes, as a sibling FX fee: when Pattern listing currency differs from your Payment account currency, deposit currency conversion is also 2.5%. Pattern is $15/mo after a 30-day trial; Pattern-only sales skip listing and transaction fees but processing still applies.
Matching shop currency to Payment account currency removes the 2.5% conversion fee on sales. Baking 2.5% into price can make sense if you must keep a listing currency buyers prefer—but you still pay the fee; you are only recovering it in the list price. Model both paths with your full fee stack.
