Etsy Share & Save Explained: The 4% Fee Credit for Your Own Traffic

If you already post your shop on Instagram, email past buyers, or send a link in a newsletter, Etsy has a free program that can claw back part of the selling fees on those orders. It is called Share & Save. Once you enroll, buyers who click a trackable link you shared outside Etsy and purchase within 30 days can trigger an instant 4% refund of the eligible order total into your Payment account.

That 4% is calculated the same way as the 6.5% transaction fee base: item price plus shipping and gift wrap you charge (before taxes in Etsy’s example). It is not a new discount for the buyer, and it does not erase listing fees, processing, Offsite Ads, or Etsy Ads. It is a fee credit on orders you brought yourself—if attribution sticks.

This guide covers how to enroll, which links count, why sellers often see “Share & Save not working,” how Offsite Ads can steal the last click, and how to run the margin math with US rates. Figures were checked against Etsy’s Help Center on October 15, 2026. Always confirm in Shop Manager.

What Share & Save actually pays you

Per Etsy Help, “How to Save on Etsy Fees with the Share & Save Program”:

You still pay the normal selling stack on that order. For a typical US Etsy Payments sale:

Share & Save only refunds 4% of that same item+shipping+gift-wrap base. Think of it as cutting the 6.5% transaction line down toward 2.5% on credited orders—not wiping fees to zero.

Which links count (and which never will)

After you opt in, shop links in the yourshopname.etsy.com format are eligible. If you use a custom domain, Help says you must forward it to that format or Share & Save may not credit.

You can also share trackable links for:

Do not count on:

Help states those will not count toward Share & Save benefits. That is the most common “I shared a link and got nothing” trap.

Where to see credits and traffic

In Shop Manager:

If the badge and fee line are missing, the order was not attributed—even if the buyer “came from your Instagram” in a casual sense.

Why Share & Save “isn’t working”

Work through Help’s checklist before opening a support ticket:

  1. Are you enrolled right now? Links only earn credits while Share & Save is active. Deactivating for a few days, then turning it back on, means clicks during the off window do not earn credit on later orders.
  2. Was the last click an Offsite Ad? Attribution uses the last link the buyer clicked before purchase. If they clicked your Instagram link last week, then tapped an Offsite Ad and bought, the order is not eligible for Share & Save. Offsite-attributed orders show in Stats and on the Payment account as Offsite Ads fees instead.
  3. Custom URL without forwarding? Forward the custom address to yourshopname.etsy.com so the visit stays in the eligible format.
  4. Messages or listing-description links? Those never qualify—copy the trackable Share / Stats / Sales-and-Discounts link instead.
  5. Outside the 30-day window? The purchase must land within 30 days of the qualifying click.

Offsite Ads vs Share & Save (same buyer, different last click)

These programs can conflict on the same shopper journey.

Offsite Ads (separate from Share & Save and from optional Etsy Ads): Etsy promotes listings off-platform. You pay only when a buyer clicks an Offsite Ad and buys from your shop within 30 days. Per Help verified today:

So a buyer who discovers you via your newsletter, then later clicks an Offsite Ad and orders, can flip from a 4% credit world into a 12%/15% charge world based on last click. That is why sellers who invest in own traffic still care about Offsite enrollment and pricing buffers—especially after the $10k one-way door.

Worked example: $80 item + $8 shipping (US)

Order total for fee base: $88 (ignore buyer sales tax for the Share & Save base, matching Help’s “before taxes” example style). Your costs: $22 materials, $7.20 postage label, $0.80 packaging → $30 COGS.

LineOrganic (no Share & Save)With Share & Save 4% creditSame order via Offsite Ads 15%
Order total$88.00$88.00$88.00
Transaction ~6.5%−$5.72−$5.72−$5.72
Processing ~3% + $0.25−$2.89−$2.89−$2.89
Listing renewal $0.20−$0.20−$0.20−$0.20
Share & Save credit—+$3.52—
Offsite Ads 15%——−$13.20
COGS−$30.00−$30.00−$30.00
Approx. cash left$49.19$52.71$35.99

Numbers are rounded. On this order, Share & Save is worth about $3.52—real money if you drive volume yourself, but tiny next to a 15% Offsite hit. Under the 12% mandatory rate the Offsite line would be about $10.56, still far larger than the 4% credit.

Use this pattern on your own average order: compute organic profit, add 0.04 × (item + shipping + gift wrap) when Share & Save attributes, and separately model Offsite at 15% or 12% with the $100 cap for large tickets.

FAQ

How do I join Etsy Share & Save?

Shop Manager → Marketing → Share & Save → Join now. Enrollment is free and optional.

How much is the Share & Save refund?

4% of the eligible order total, calculated like the transaction-fee base (item + shipping + gift wrap). Help’s example: $100 before taxes → $4 posted instantly to the Payment account.

Do Etsy Messages or listing-description links earn Share & Save?

No. Help states links sent through Messages or placed in listing descriptions do not count. Use trackable shop, listing, promo, review, or section links from Shop Manager or the Seller app.

Why did I lose Share & Save on an order after an Offsite Ad?

Last-click attribution. If the buyer’s last visit before purchase came from an Offsite Ad, the order is not eligible for Share & Save and may carry Offsite Ads fees instead.

Do I still pay Offsite Ads if I use Share & Save?

They are separate programs. Share & Save can credit own-traffic orders; Offsite Ads charge 15% (opt-out allowed if the shop never hit $10k in any 365-day period) or 12% mandatory for life once it has, with a $100 cap and 30-day attribution. Last click decides which path applies.

Does Share & Save refund processing or the $0.20 listing fee?

Help frames the benefit as a 4% Payment-account refund on the eligible order total (transaction-fee-style base). Expect processing and listing/renewal charges to remain on the sale.
