Why Etsy's Estimated Earnings Calculator Misses Offsite Ads

If you open a listing in Shop Manager and use the estimated earnings tool in Price & Inventory, the number feels like “what I’ll keep.” For many sellers it is close—until the order is attributed to Offsite Ads, or until a Share & Save credit shows up. Etsy’s own Seller Handbook says the calculator shows listing, payment processing, and transaction fees, and that it does not include fees that can vary by order, including Offsite Ads (which can raise fees) and Share & Save (which can lower them).

That gap is why people search for “Etsy listing profit calculator wrong” or “why is my Etsy profit estimate so high.” The tool is optional and basic by design. It is not a lie—and it is not a full profit model. This guide walks through what the in-listing estimate includes, what it leaves out, US worked examples with and without Offsite Ads, and how to price so attributed orders still clear. Fee figures were checked against Etsy’s Help Center and Seller Handbook on October 16, 2026. Always confirm in your Shop Manager.

Where the estimated earnings tool lives

Per Etsy’s Seller Handbook article on the earnings calculator:

So if the estimate “looks high,” the first check is whether you entered full COGS (especially labor and packaging). The second check—often the expensive one—is whether you treated that estimate as if Offsite Ads and Share & Save never exist.

What the estimate includes (US baseline)

For a typical United States Etsy Payments sale, the three fee lines the estimate is built around match Help’s fee pages:

FeeWhat Help says (US)Notes
Listing / renewal$0.20Charged when you list, when auto-renew expired hits, when auto-renew sold replenishes quantity, and for extra units in a multi-quantity order
Transaction6.5% of order amount in listing currencyApplies to item + shipping + gift wrap you charge
Payment processing3% + $0.25On total sale price including shipping, and sales tax when you charge tax on the listing

Those three lines are the “clean organic” stack many fee posts quote as roughly ~10% + $0.45 before ads. The listing estimate is useful for that baseline—if you also subtract real COGS.

It does not replace reading your Payment account. Offsite Ads fees, for example, are sale-based fees that sit with the order in Pending; listing renewals and Etsy Ads hit Current in real time.

What the estimate leaves out (and why sellers underprice)

Etsy’s Handbook is explicit: the calculator does not include fees that could vary for each order. Fees can be higher if the sale came from an Offsite Ad, or lower if the sale came from your Share & Save link.

Offsite Ads (the big upside miss)

Offsite Ads are separate from optional Etsy Ads. Etsy promotes listings on external channels (search, social, partners, display). You pay only when a buyer clicks an Offsite Ad and purchases from your shop within 30 days. Per Help, “How Etsy’s Offsite Ads Work,” verified today:

None of that 12%/15% line appears in the Price & Inventory estimate. If you set list price so the estimate shows a thin but “acceptable” margin, an Offsite-attributed order can wipe that margin—or turn it negative—without the listing form warning you.

Share & Save (the downside miss the other way)

Share & Save can refund 4% of an eligible order (item + shipping + gift wrap style base) to your Payment account when a buyer clicks a trackable link you shared outside Etsy and orders within 30 days. Messages and listing-description links do not count; last click from an Offsite Ad can steal eligibility. The estimate also ignores this credit, so own-traffic sellers who only look at the listing tool may under-estimate take-home on well-attributed shares—and still over-estimate on Offsite-heavy weeks.

Other costs the tool never sees

Postage labels, refunds, VAT/GST on seller fees, 2.5% currency conversion (listing ≠ payment currency), and optional Etsy Ads also sit outside the estimate. It is not a shop P&L.

Worked example: $50 item + $8 shipping (US)

Order total for fee math: $58 (no buyer sales tax in this example). Your costs: $18 materials/labor/packaging + $6.50 postage label → $24.50 COGS.

A. What the listing estimate style math looks like (organic stack only)

LineAmount
Order total$58.00
Transaction 6.5% of $58−$3.77
Processing 3% + $0.25−$1.99
Listing renewal $0.20−$0.20
COGS−$24.50
Approx. cash left$27.54

If you only used the in-listing estimate and entered costs carefully, you might price as if ~$27.50 is normal take-home.

B. Same order attributed to Offsite Ads at 15%

LineAmount
Organic fee stack (as above)−$5.96
Offsite Ads 15% of $58−$8.70
COGS−$24.50
Approx. cash left$18.84

The estimate was ~$8.70 high on this order—exactly the Offsite line the Handbook says is excluded. That is not a rounding bug; it is missing product math.

C. Same order at the mandatory 12% rate (shop past the $10k door)

Offsite line ≈ $6.96. Cash left ≈ $20.58. Still about $7 below the organic-style estimate.

D. Same order with Share & Save 4% credit (no Offsite)

Credit ≈ 0.04 × $58 = $2.32. Cash left ≈ $29.86—about $2.32 better than the estimate. Last-click Offsite still overrides Share & Save on that journey.

Cap note: On a $900 attributed order, 15% would be $135 but Help caps Offsite at $100, so the miss vs the estimate is still large—but not unbounded.

Thin-ticket trap: $12 printable + $0 shipping

On a $12 digital order (no shipping), the organic stack is about $0.78 + $0.61 + $0.20 = $1.59 (~13%). Add Offsite at 15% ($1.80) and fees jump to about $3.39 (~28%). With $2 COGS, the estimate-style keep is ~$8.41; the Offsite keep is ~$6.61. The listing tool still looks fine—you only feel it on the Payment account. Under $10k, opt-out is still a choice; past the door, bake 12% into price or SKU mix.

How to use Etsy’s estimate without getting fooled

  1. Treat the listing number as an organic fee floor, not a bank deposit—then run Offsite at 15% or 12%.
  2. Price for your mix. If Offsite is ~20% of orders at 12%, a shop-wide buffer is closer to 2.4% of GMV, while attributed tickets still take the full 12%.
  3. Trust the Offsite dashboard (Marketing → Offsite Ads) and order badges over “buyers find me on Instagram.”
  4. Before $10k, review opt-out while it exists; after, 12% is mandatory for life.
  5. Reconcile monthly: renewals, Ads, labels, and VAT-on-fees sit outside a one-order estimate.

A practical pricing checklist

Enter full costs (time, packaging, unpaid shipping). Treat the estimate as the organic fee floor. Add Offsite at 15% or 12% of item+shipping+gift wrap (mind the $100 cap). Count a Share & Save 4% credit only on trackable off-Etsy volume. Re-check after shipping, Smart Pricing, or tax changes—those move the processing base.

Canopio’s free calculator applies US listing, transaction, processing, and Offsite Ads (15% or 12%) to one order in the browser—no sign-up—so you can compare the organic stack the listing tool approximates with an attributed Offsite scenario. FAQ

Why is my Etsy estimated earnings number higher than my real payout?

Often because the Price & Inventory tool estimates listing, transaction, and processing only. Offsite Ads (15% or 12%), Etsy Ads, labels bought later, refunds, and taxes on fees can reduce what hits the bank. Share & Save can move the other way on attributed own-traffic orders.

Does Etsy’s estimated earnings calculator include Offsite Ads?

No. Etsy’s Seller Handbook states the calculator does not include fees that vary by order, and fees can be higher if the sale came from an Offsite Ad.

Does it include Share & Save?

No. The same Handbook note says fees can be lower if the sale came from your Share & Save link—those credits are outside the basic estimate.

Where do I find estimated earnings in the listing form?

On desktop or mobile web, open the listing → Price & Inventory → estimate earnings. It is not available in the Etsy Seller app (per Handbook).

How do Offsite Ads fees work if I never opted in?

Sellers are automatically enrolled. If the shop has never hit $10k USD in any 365-day period, you can opt out under Settings → Offsite Ads and the attributed rate is 15%. Once the shop has hit that threshold, participation is mandatory for life at 12%, with a $100 per-order cap and 30-day attribution.

Should I ignore Etsy’s estimate completely?

No. Use it for the organic fee floor and COGS, then model Offsite (and Share & Save) before you lock a price.
