Black Friday week, a shop coupon, or a “20% off” badge often triggers the same panic: Am I still paying Etsy fees as if the item sold at full price? The answer depends on who funds the discount.
Confusing the two is how sellers underprice a deep shop sale—or panic at a full-price fee line on an Etsy-funded order. Fee figures were checked against Etsy’s Help Center on October 19, 2026. Always confirm in your Shop Manager.
For a typical United States Etsy Payments order:
| Fee | Help Center rule (US) | On a seller-funded sale |
|---|---|---|
| Transaction | 6.5% of the order amount in listing currency | On item + shipping + gift wrap after your discount |
| Payment processing | 3% + $0.25 | Percent tracks the discounted total (incl. shipping); $0.25 stays fixed |
| Listing / auto-renew sold | $0.20 | Still $0.20—discount does not cut it |
| Offsite Ads (if attributed) | 15% or 12% of the amount you made from the sale | Base is the sale you made, not the old list price |
Etsy’s Fees & Taxes page: the 6.5% transaction fee applies to shipping and gift wrapping you charge. The Fees policy frames it around the price you display plus shipping and gift wrap. When you run a seller sale, checkout shows the discounted amount—so the percentage cut follows that lower number. Fixed dollars do not.
Offsite Ads (Help, “How Etsy’s Offsite Ads Work,” verified today):
You are not charged Offsite on the old list price—but an attributed sale still takes 12–15% of the cash you actually received on that order.
Scenario. List $40 item + $8 shipping = $48. Shop sale: 25% off the item (shipping stays $8). Buyer pays $30 + $8 = $38. No sales tax in this example. COGS (materials, labor, packaging, postage): $18.
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Order total | $48.00 |
| Transaction 6.5% of $48 | −$3.12 |
| Processing 3% + $0.25 | −$1.69 |
| Listing renewal $0.20 | −$0.20 |
| Organic fees | $5.01 (~10.4%) |
| After COGS $18 | ~$24.99 left |
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Order total (buyer pays) | $38.00 |
| Transaction 6.5% of $38 | −$2.47 |
| Processing 3% + $0.25 | −$1.39 |
| Listing renewal $0.20 | −$0.20 |
| Organic fees | $4.06 (~10.7%) |
| After COGS $18 | ~$15.94 left |
Percentage fees fell with the discount. Fixed $0.20 and $0.25 did not. Absolute dollars left for you dropped by almost $9 because you gave the buyer $10 off and still paid nearly the same fixed stack. That is the “fees still feel high on sale” effect—not a silent charge on the old list price.
Organic fees $4.06 + Offsite 15% of $38 = $5.70 + COGS $18 → about $10.24 left. At mandatory 12% (shop past the $10k door): Offsite ≈ $4.56; cash left ≈ $11.38.
Pair sale planning with a break-even discount check; see the sibling guide on Black Friday discount break-even.
On a $20 discounted ticket, organic US fees are roughly $1.30 transaction + ~$0.85 processing + $0.20 listing ≈ $2.35 (~11.8%) before Offsite. The same fixed $0.45 is a smaller share of a $60 full-price order. Sales push volume into thin-ticket ground where fixed fees dominate. That is percentage fees on the sale price plus fixed fees that ignore the coupon—not “fees on original list price.”
Help (“How Etsy Funded Coupons Work For Sellers,” verified October 19, 2026):
If the listing is $40 + $8 shipping and the buyer applies an Etsy $5 off code, your Payment account should still reflect roughly $48 order economics (plus local tax rules). Fee lines look like full price—because the fee base is the full order Etsy funded you for.
How to tell: order details in Shop Manager show Etsy-funded amount. Checkout has separate fields for Etsy coupon codes vs shop coupon codes.
| Seller shop coupon $5 off item | Etsy-funded $5 coupon | |
|---|---|---|
| Buyer pays (item+ship, no tax) | $43 | $43 at checkout |
| You receive (before fees) | $43 | $48 (Etsy funds $5) |
| Transaction 6.5% | $2.80 on $43 | $3.12 on $48 |
| Processing 3%+$0.25 (no tax) | ≈ $1.54 | ≈ $1.69 |
| Your discount cost | $5 (you) | $0 (Etsy) |
Fees look “higher” on the Etsy-funded order because the fee base is full—correct per Help. Your net is still better than funding the $5 yourself.
Canopio’s free one-order calculator accepts post-discount item and shipping amounts and toggles Offsite at 15% or 12%—no sign-up. Free listing score; optional rewrites $2.99/10 or $9.99/40; one-time $9.90 Shop Audit via Etsy OAuth—no subscription. Independent of Etsy; confirm rates on Etsy’s pages.
For a seller-funded sale or shop coupon, percentage fees (including 6.5% on item + shipping + gift wrap) track the amount charged after your discount. Fixed fees ($0.20, $0.25) stay the same.
No. You receive the full order amount and pay the same seller fees as without that coupon. Etsy funds the buyer’s discount; it does not shrink your fee base.
Fixed fees do not shrink, and Offsite Ads (if attributed) still take 12% or 15% of the sale total. Absolute fee dollars may fall slightly; your margin usually falls more because you funded the discount.
Help bases the fee on the amount you made from the attributed sale ($100 cap, 30-day attribution). On a seller-funded discount, that is the discounted order—not the old list price. Under $10k in any 365-day period you may opt out; after $10k, 12% is mandatory for life.
No. Buyers use the shop coupon field for your codes and the Etsy coupon field for Etsy-funded codes. Wrong field changes who pays for the discount.
